THE SCOOP THAT NEVER MELTED

OH MY GOSH! The gelato in Italy is next level. It’s luscious, creamy and dare I say, unforgettable?

Unforgettable, a lot like my first trip to Italy. Now, based on my previous statement you’re probably thinking “Well, how many times have you been to Italy?” I’ve only been once, but I just know I’ll be back soon.

I of course have to return for another luscious scoop. Every spoonful felt rich and deeply satisfying. A level of satisfaction I’ve only encountered when spending time with family. My family make up is long, blended and confusing, so I’ll just remind you that it’s not blood that makes family. I went to Italy with my cousin who grew up in Bassano Del Grappa, Italy. We visited Milan and Venice, but spent most of our time in Bassano.

While in Bassano, we went to Bottega Del Gelato. I ordered a double scoop cup, one scoop of Crema Vaniglia and one scoop of Pistacchio. It was like nothing I’ve tasted before. The warmth of the Crema Vaniglia felt like the big hug I received from my aunt the day we landed (this is our first time meeting). That same warmth followed me throughout the whole trip. The excitement I saw on everyone's face when they saw my cousin, and the childlike giggle my cousin gave when greeting her dog, Knight. The joy in their greeting reflected the usual liveliness of my aunt’s home. When going to visit family, a warm welcome is to be expected, but the connection was simply unexpected. Similar to the nutty scoop of pistachio gelato.

The nutty flavor of the pistachio gelato reminded me of the kids who came in and out of my aunt's house throughout the trip. The house was always filled with joy, laughter and dance. The kids came over often because they were practicing for a showcase they had coming up, and the way they all settled in at the dinner table for meals prepared by my aunt, told me all I needed to know.

Each bite of Crema Vaniglia and pistachio told their own story, but when blended together created a whole new chapter. A single cup of gelato changed me forever, and I’ll carry each spoon with me always. Just as I didn’t expect the nutty richness of the pistachio gelato to echo the free‑spirited laughter of kids in my aunt’s home, I also didn’t expect a simple dessert in Bassano to mean so much more than empty calories.
