INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY - BIBLE EDITION

On the 8th of March the world celebrates International Women's Day, a day dedicated to recognising the strength, resilience, and achievements of women across history and cultures. The Bible is filled with remarkable women whose courage, wisdom, faith and leadership shaped entire nations, and changed the course of history.


In honour of International Women’s Day 2026, let’s take a closer look at some of the most powerful, influential and inspiring women in the Bible.


Women

  • Eve: She was created as a mate for Adam and, as the first woman, is considered the mother of all the living. Her story can be found in Genesis 2-4.


  • Mary also knows as 'Virgin Mary': The mother of Jesus. Her story can be found in the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.


  • Sarah: Previously known as Sarai, she was the wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac, thus the matriarch of Judaism and Christianity.  Her story can be found in Genesis 11-15.


  • Esther: A Jewish woman who became the Queen of Persia and was able to stop the planned genocide of her people. Her story can be found in the book of Esther.


  • Ruth: The great-grandmother of King David is renowned for her loyalty. Her story can be found in book of Ruth.


  • Abigail: Known for being intelligent and preventing the slaughter of her household after her husband was disrespectful. Her story can be found in 1 Samuel 25.

  • Hagar: The mother of Ishmail, Abraham's other son, and thus the matriarch of Islam. Her story can be found in Genesis 16 and 21.


  • Hannah: The mother of Samuel, the child she prayed for and dedicated to the Lord. She's known for her perseverance in faith and prayer.  Her story can be found in 1 Samuel 1-2.


  • Deborah: The only female judge in Israel, a prophetess and a warrior who went into battle to defeat the enemy - a real superwoman. Her story can be found in Judges 4-5.


  • Mary Magdalene: A faithful follower of Jesus and the first to see Him resurrected. Her story can be found in the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.


  • Lydia: A wealthy businesswoman who was the first recorded Christian convert in Europe. Her story can be found in Acts 16: 14-15.


  • Priscilla: A leader and teacher in the early church. Her story can be found in Acts 18 and Romans 16:3-5.
